Following the introduction of the rum ration aboard Her Majesty's ships (ca. 1687), official measures were introduced to keep the "pusser" honest in his allocations. Rum rations were originally issued "neat" but following orders issued by Admiral Vernon ("Old Grog") in 1740, the rum ration and water were mixed to produce "grog". In 1850, the proportions of rum to water in grog became 1/2 gill rum to 1/4 pint of water. Our 1/2 Gill "Tot" Rum Cup holds approx. 1/8 pint (2 oz.) of rum which was a daily ration of all ratings below Petty Officer and over 20 years old. Tinned copper, "1/2 gill" marking on front and LINK Royal Navy Anchor LINK on bottom. 2" tall. |
